HD현대인프라코어는 K2 전차에 들어가는 엔진을 제작, 공급한다. 굴착기와 휠로더 등과 같은 건설기계를 메인 사업으로 하지만, 전쟁과 인공지능(AI) 데이터센터 수요 확대로 방산·초대형 발전기 엔진 사업 비중도 점점 늘어나고 있다. 2020년 전체 매출의 18%를 차지했던 엔진 부문은 지난해 28%까지 늘어났다.
HD현대인프라코어는 두산인프라코어 시절인 지난 2005년부터 국방과학연구소와 전차 엔진 개발에 들어갔다. 2014년 현대로템이 방사청과 대한민국 육군에 납품하는 K2 전차 2차 생산 계약을 맺으면서부터, K2 전차에 HD현대인프라코어 엔진이 적용됐다. 이후 2022년 현대로템과 1830억원 규모 폴란드 K2 전차 수출사업용 엔진 공급 계약을 체결했다.
앞서 현대로템은 지난 2022년 7월 폴란드 군비청과 K2 전차 1000대 수출 계약을 맺고, 그해 8월 180대 1차 실행계약을 체결했다. 현재 9조원 규모 2차 계약 체결을 앞두고 있다.
